Outventure Training

Outventure Training Centre BASED ON THE Orange River is your 1 stop paddling spot offering accredited swiftwater rescue training, guide training centre, paddle school and consultancy services. Craig is and African Paddling Association (APA) accredited Instructor and offers the following courses and training:

APA/ASA/THETA Guide training - River Guide and Trip Leader courses and Assessments Swiftwater Rescue courses for recreational paddlers, canoeists (Canoeing SA endorsed). Whitewater Paddling courses and training. Film industry Services – location scouting, rigging, safety, stunts, equipment, etc.

Guide training
The River Guide course is ideal for newbee guides entering the industry and provides them with all the skills and techniques required to be part of the guide team.Responsibilities include safety, rescue and group management on a swiftwater paddling tip. The course is three days and three nights and consists of practical drills on the river and classroom lectures and discussions at night. The course is extremely practical and physical, a reasonable degree of fitness is required. Once you have completed the course you can attend and APA assessment, scheduled at a later date comprising of a written and practical assessment. Your qualification is also recognised internationally.

External transport are the candidate’s own responsibility. Rentals and transport can be arranged through us if you need it.

Course fee: R845.00 (manual, logbook, rescue equipment and instruction)
Logistics fee: Around R500.00 (catering, accommodation, permits, shuttle transport at river)
Boat hire: R250per set p/p for the course

Course fees total: R845.00 + logistics

OPTIONAL
APA fees:

  • R75.00 registration - new members (incl. card, badge and logbook)
  • R210.00 Annual membership fee

 

Assessments take place at a later date, once the trainee has logged a total of 20 river days. These are organised by APA and held periodically throughout the year.

Trip Leader workshop
Runs over 3 days and 3 nights and is aimed at experienced candidates who wish to upgrade to Trip Leader Restricted status. The workshop will focus on advanced safety and rescue techniques, leadership issues as regards to group management as well as crisis management. It will include an overview of the SOP document, its’ purpose and how to compile it.

Candidates presenting themselves for Trip Leader (restricted) status will be practically assessed during the course. Assessment of understanding and knowledge will take place through submission of a workbook and SOP document after the course. The course fee includes instruction, food and camping fees & checklists and course notes. Boating equipment and transport to the course are the candidate’s own responsibility but can be arranged through us.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE

  • Valid River Guide qualification
  • Minimum 30 logged days as qualified guide
  • Level 3 First Aid
  • References from Employers

The workshop includes a practical assessment and the post trip written requirements form the theory assessment. There is no separate, later assessment.

Swiftwater Safety & Rescue for Recreational Paddlers
This course focuses on equipping Adventure Racers and Canoe Racers with a basic knowledge of Swiftwater Safety and Rescue.

Topics covered will include the following:

  • Swiftwater Features & hazards
  • Reading the river and picking the best line
  • Paddling strokes
  • Wading techniques
  • Basic Swiftwater rescue techniques including ropework
  • Tips & techniques
Courses are held on demand and costs depend on number of trainees and course venue.

 

Whitewater Paddling Courses & Instruction
We offer courses and instruction for beginners, intermediate to advanced paddlers. We also sell new and used kayaks and all related equipment.

Individual Instruction - R500.00 per session (4hrs) plus travel
One on one and ideal. Skills such as rolling, river running and paddle strokes are covered.

Rolling clinic – R200p/p for one and half hour session Kayak and equipment included.
Swimming pool sessions. You learn the basic rolling technique.

Introductory Kayak Course - R845.00 pp (Instruction only). One night’s camping accommodation is included.
These courses are held over a weekend to cater for recreational paddlers.
