Cape Town to Augrabies 825 km
Johannesburg to Augrabies 875 km
Windhoek to Augrabies 1050 km
BANKS:
Banks are usually open Mon-Fri 09h00-15h30 and Sat 09h00-11h00. Automated teller machines are found in the bigger towns. Its best to carry South African rands in cash on you, as some shops in the area do not accept credit cards.
CREDIT CARDS:
All Visa and Master cards are accepted where applicable.
TRANSPORT:
You can fly in to Upington from Cape Town or Johannesburg. Daily Intercity coach services pass through Upington from all major centres in South Africa and Namibia. Car hire companies are situated at the airport. Kalahari Outventures can provide transfers to and from the airport. 4x4 vehicles can be hired from the airport.
VEHICLES:
Normal sedan vehicles will tour the region as long as you steer clear of the dunes! Minibuses and 4x4 vehicles are best for game viewing being higher off the ground. Motorcycles are not permitted in national parks. Please be aware of your tyre pressures when driving gravel roads and during extreme temperatures.
FUEL / GAS:
Petrol stations are available in most towns, but it is advisable to have a full tank before traveling long distances. All hour services are available along the major routes.
SAFETY:
The Northern Cape is considered to be the safest destination in South Africa. However, it is best to take the same precautions you would in any other city or town. Avoid the display of valuables on you and in your vehicle.
ACCOMMODATION:
Excellent hotel, guest house, bed & breakfast and camping accommodation is offered in the region. Kalahari Outventures offers accommodation with our sister companies in various forms. Camping, Backpackers, Guesthouse and Luxury Lodges available, ideal for traveling the area and using us as a base to explore the surroundings, but anyone is welcome to stay over for whatever reason.
MALARIA:
The Northern Cape is malaria-free.
CLOTHING:
Light cotton clothes, comfortable hiking shoes and a hat are recommended summer attire. A wind jacket will help in weather changes. For winter, pack some warm comfortable clothes for the early morning and at night.
CLIMATE:
The Northern Cape is a large dry region of fluctuating temperatures and rainfall. Summer (October - March) temperatures vary between 30-40°C. Night time temperatures in winter (June-July) may drop below freezing point, but winter days are warm and pleasant. Humidity is very low. Take throat lozenges for possible dry throats. It is advisable to take sun protection lotion particularly if you have a lighter complexion.
